Your storefront is perhaps the most important part of your retail business. It helps attract walk-by traffic and impress new visitors. However, entirely too many retail owners don't invest in a proper storefront sign. This is the most important signage of your business and it is well worth the funds required to create it properly. Many store owners decide not to spend too much on their sign in order to put their funds into other aspects of the business. While understandable, this fails to take into account the amount of business that can be attracted with proper signage.

Does Your Sign Have the Right Elements?

If you already have a sign in front of your retail store or you're in the process of designing one, take some time to examine if it contains the below three elements of a successful sign:

  1. An effective call to action. It's a given that your storefront signage will contain your logo and perhaps a slogan, but does it contain a call to action? A call to action is anything that inspires the viewer of the sign to take the desired action. Usually, the action you'll be wanting is to visit your store. Depending on your store location, such as near a busy street, you may want people to visit your website or give you a call once they've reached their destination. It's not enough to simply say, "Call us!" or "Visit our website!" anymore. You need to give them a reason to do so. Offering a specific discount or exclusive inventory is a great way to incite an action.
  2. Does it contain eye catching colors? If you're in a strip mall, as many retail stores are these days, chances are every store looks the same. You have the same roof, same awning and same storefront. The only element that looks different is your storefront signage. Instead of having a plain sign that blends in, shoot for a sign with colors that catch the eye. This will depend partially on the signs that your neighbors are using, but generally red, orange and yellow are known to grab attention.
  3. Is your storefront signage properly placed? The location of your signage is almost as important as its contents. If it can't be properly read, it's not an effective sign. In most situations, you'll want your signage as high as possible so that people can see it as they drive past. You may even wish to invest in a hanging sign or lower sign for those who might be walking past your store.

Storefront signs can go a long way in helping you spread the word about your business. Ensure that your sign has the above three elements and you'll be set for success.
