Your business' sign should call attention to itself, not just blend in, barely noticeable, with the rest of the signs on the street. If your sign is looking a bit bland, here are some ways to make it more vibrant and attention-grabbing. Some of these ideas require replacing your sign, while others allow you to work with what you have.

Design a sign with a dark background and light lettering.

If you look around at businesses' signs, you'll notice that most of them have light backgrounds with dark lettering. There's nothing wrong with this combination -- except that it's far from unique. Go against the grain, and have a new sign designed with a dark background and light lettering. For instance, you could design a navy blue sign with pale yellow letters. Choosing glow-in-the-dark paint for the letters will even make them readable late at night.

Give your letters a dark outline.

Perhaps the problem is not that your entire sign is boring, but rather than the letters on it don't stand out enough. See if you can paint a dark outline around the letters on your sign to separate them more from the background. If you have an old sign you're considering replacing anyway, it can't hurt to try this yourself. However, if you want to ensure that your sign stays looking perfect, hiring a professional with a steady hand may be a better bet.

Place more lights around your sign.

Lighting your sign up will call more attention to it, not just at night, but on dreary, overcast days as well. You could try mounting simple, industrial lights on the corners of your sign holder. If you're working with a smaller sign, surround it with some holiday lights. They'll add a playful, relaxed touch. Setting up a spotlight to shine on a large, roadside sign is another idea worth considering.

Design a new sign with a unique color scheme.

If all of the other signs on your street have neutral color pallets, go bold with a red and blue color scheme for your new sign. If everyone else on your street uses green and tan, use orange and black. Of course, you'll want to pick a color combination that fits your business's personality. Pink and yellow aren't ideal for an outdoor store. Try, however, to choose something that's a bit unconventional without completely eschewing customer expectations.

Your sign is meant to draw people into your business. It can't do that by blending in. Use the ideas above to either design a new sign, or add new life to the one you have. Chances are, you'll see your customer base start to climb back up, thanks to the new signage.
